Undergraduate at Bennington College, studying Symbolic Systems.

Welcome, Franklinities!(Continued)

During Coffee Hour, everyone picks a day to bring some food to share, as well as some of their work, be it art, poetry, a movie, whatever they want to show. We are always interested in what everyone else is working on. In addition, we have a large glass-topped coffee table in our living room, under which we display student art and interesting magazine clippings. Bring something to decorate the area!

We just got a new kitchen last year, so we have a new stove, oven, and microwave. We don’t have any cookware or dishes, so if you like to cook, you should plan on bringing your own. We do not have a washer or dryer in the house, so you will need to carry your laundry to Commons, so be sure to bring an easy-to-carry laundry sack or basket. Also, be sure to bring lots of quarters for the laundry, especially for the days when the quarter machine is empty!

A little advice… BRING AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO MOVE FOUR TIMES DURING THE YEAR!

However, we strongly recommend bringing the following items:

  • a fan
  • an umbrella
  • a power strip (remember that extension cords are not permitted as they are a fire hazard.)
  • lamps (room lamp, reading lamp)
  • WARM clothing (the winters are COLD here…)
  • quarters for laundry ($1.50-wash, $1.00-dry)

What not to bring:

  • Candles ($100 fine for your first offense!)
  • Extension cords, coffee pots, stringed lights (i.e. X-mas lights)
  • pets other than small fish
  • your entire bedroom from home!

Tips for the first year:

  • Call or email your roommate over the summer, and discuss what you are bringing so you don’t double up
  • There are lots of opportunities to dress-up, so consider a few outrageous ensembles to bring…
  • Again, the winters are COLD, so bring a good hat and scarf!
  • Coffee hour is every Sunday at 10 pm

If you have any questions, feel free to contact us over the summer!
