01 Work immersive first

A phone booth. A payphone that's already ringing. It's 1995, and a kid named MissX left her red box behind.

1337 (say "leet") is a live, one-on-one phone show: a single guest dials into the phone-phreak underground and is vetted, tested, and guided by performers on the other end of the line. I wrote it and produce it through Charming Stranger.

Debut workshop run in NYC, Nov 20–22, 2026. A companion choose-your-own-adventure book, 1337 Adventures on the Phone, is in the works.

First up, Control Room: players run a town's systems. Automating one is faster. It also destroys the manual. Nobody tells you when it starts going wrong.

03 House rules

  1. One participant at a time. Intimacy scales by depth, not headcount.
  2. Know your limits, not the plot. Safety and comfort aren't the same thing. Instead of spoiling everything that might happen, I make sure you can name a limit at any moment, and the show bends to it.
  3. Analog where it counts. Payphones, pagers, paper. Real objects make real stakes.
  4. No surveillance. Charming Stranger doesn't build on Google, Meta, or Amazon. This site has no trackers, no cookies, no analytics.
  5. Ship it, then playtest it again. Workshop runs, open documentation, reusable rigs for the next artist.

Cameo Wood is an Emmy Award–winning writer-director and immersive producer. She created 1337, a live one-on-one phone show, and Override, an immersive series about AI risk; co-produces at Culture House Immersive; and executive produced the Sundance 2026 documentary Joybubbles. Before film, she was a telecom engineer.

Cameo Wood is an Emmy Award–winning writer-director and immersive producer who makes work for an audience of one. Through her company Charming Stranger, she wrote and produces 1337, a live, one-on-one phone show set in the 1995 phone-phreak underground, debuting at Odyssey Works' New Frame in New York in November 2026, and is building Override, a series of immersive experiences about AI risk.

She is Co-Producer, Immersive at Culture House Immersive, was an executive producer of the Sundance 2026 documentary Joybubbles, and was a producing partner on Redwood on Broadway and Third Rail Projects' True Love Forever. Her short film Real Artists, adapted from a Ken Liu story, won a Northern California Area Emmy and aired on PBS.

She founded the Coven Film Festival, publishes practitioner interviews at Anything Can Be Said, and holds an MA in Dramatic Arts from Harvard. She was a telecom engineer and VoIP CTO before any of it.
